The German giant holds the number four spot among the top 10 running company dollar earners, largely on the strength of its Microbounce, Powerbounce and adiZero lines that have contributed to the brand’s recent revitalization. We held a Running Now Q&A with Mikal Peveto, adidas America Head of Running, to find out what adidas Running has been up to lately, how adidas develops a running shoe, what the brand thinks about the emerging minimalist trend, and how the brand plans to expand adidas Running in the near future."

CounterKicks: What is adidas’ design philosophy?

Mikal Peveto: At adidas, we strive to follow Adi Dassler’s legacy. He created 31 standards for his products, brand, and business. Those standards are why the brand is so strong to this day. Six of those standards come together to create our design philosophy. They are: Only the best for the athlete; Lead, don’t copy; Quality and Creativity go hand in hand; Always attempt to simplify every process as far as possible; Functionality, fit, weight, aesthetics and quality make an adidas product; And finally, Our products must always be recognizable as adidas products.

CK: Discuss adidas’ running shoe categories and models. What do they offer runners?

Peveto: Our performance running shoes are segmented by foot type and runner type. Pretty standard fare. Stability is the largest segment of performance running, but means very little outside the running industry. The neutral, or cushion, segment is growing in the performance sector and dominates in other sport categories such as basketball or tennis. Lightweight styles are our most dynamic and outside of toning, it is the fastest growing segment of performance footwear. Runners and athletes are realizing that they can still have all the protection and comfort they seek without all the bulk. adiZero is our collection of lighter weight running shoes.

CK: Take us through the process of how an adidas running shoe is designed. What inspires the designs? Is there a team of designers for each project or are the projects assigned to an individual designer?

Peveto: I’m no designer but man would I love to be! The process starts with a market assessment: what is working, what is not, what trends are on the horizon. Then a line plan is established and briefs are written. The idea is to clearly communicate the market need, the financial goals, the competitive set and the unique point of view for the individual products. Then the magic happens. Each team of designers and each individual designer is as different as the inspiration that fuels them. I’ve worked with designers who have been inspired by nature, by structures, by cars – they love cars! – and I’ve worked with designers inspired by a deadline.

CK: What’s the story behind Microbounce/Powerbounce Tech? How did it come about?

Peveto: Bounce, Micro and Megabounce were an evolution of our a3 (a-cubed) technology. The idea is that with minimal amounts of foam in the midsole you get a very consistent feel and ride out of your shoe. TPU, the material the Bounce elements are constructed out of, does not break down like EVA foam does, so the life of the midsole is exponentially longer than traditional foam. It is also not affected by heat and cold, so in the dog days of summer or the dead of winter your shoe feels the same. With Powerbounce, the cross bar (colored piece in the element) is tunable, meaning we can make the medial side stiffer

"A consistent collection that really find its feet in the coming months, from shoes to some superior apparel, it's clear that adidas Originals are taking this line seriously. The shades of Visvim are certainly no bad thing, and these feel like an evolution of the cues present in the Neighborhood ZX 700 Boat from the aZX collection too, but there's more than enough nods to iconic adi models here too. Every brand should have a solid boot design, and in the GSG 9 tactical design, adidas were doing all-black ruggedness while many of the blog comment critics were still pissing their pants. 1978's Reinhold Messner endorsed SUPER-TREKKING boot (like the GSG 9, recently given a decent update) reissued just a few months back in German-made form is another masterpiece.So in case you were wondering, adidas knows boots.

The Hike Spezial has been developed for casual wear. They weren't built for shoot outs with the Red Army Faction or solo Everest ascents, but these are still built tough. The low cut versions of these in a more traditional suede makeup were begging for a spot of extra height to offset some odd midsole detailing. Here, the nylon mesh, reflective jagged detailing , premium leather, plus the use of colours is excellent. The beige versions in particular are some of the best OT Tech designs to date. And just when everything's getting a little olde world and D-ring heritage hiker, the tongue label keeps it contemporary. We're glad the high-cut versions jettison the crossed stripe interpretations on the heel too, and while the trefoil towards forefoot looks a little ungainly here, in the flesh, it's a little less jarring. We're looking forward to road testing these when they're released this coming October..." (source)

I initially heard that these were exclusively released in a 3 pack to sneaker boutiques only.

Then I got word @ Sneaker Friends from my secret source that these would be a general market release.

And now WISH is the 1st store on deck I heard WALTER's is next

While I don't think we getting these @ Lenox Mall, I pray the adi-gods are kind to us and deliver the Fortitude Mid to us...

Bobby Ray Concert USTREAM in ATLANTA

Now that B.o.B. is doing it MEGA big with The 3 Stripes it's almost like I have a renewed vested interest in his success. If you followed my previous post then you would know that Bobby Ray is one of the new faces for our MEGA Collection campaign.

I knew about the FREE show he had coming up @ Centerstage and I knew that he had previously killed it Tabernacle, Smith's Olde Bar and Sugarhill. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to see those shows. Me being the 3 Stripes Brand Ambassador that I am was not going to miss this performance though. NO WAY!!! (plus I wanted to see what he was going to wear from the ORIGINALS collection! LOL!)

Dude has come a looooonnnnnngggggg way from the days of Club Crucial and Almost Famous Showcases. He is a genuine talent, a rare breed and I'm glad B Rich saw whatever he did that made him believe in B.o.B. I hope adidas and The Ham Squad can enjoy a long productive and fruitful partnership together and for whoever is reading this...

I'm a fan of marketing and movements. I filter most of my experiences and observations through a marketing lens. Dissecting brands and their connection to their audience. I started out doing grassroots/ lifestyle marketing in music and so I always have a tendency to be critical of labels, artists, managers, etc in that regard. Bobby Ray is different...

I think I first spotted dude at Rovella Williams' ALMOST FAMOUS showcase. He was performing his ode to weed song CLOUD 9. But then I would see dude at every other showcase regardless of the crowd. Thugs, backpackers, head wraps all have different open mics and it's rare for you to see a dude connect to all of them effectively. But that's what B.o.B. did. I saw him crush it at CLUB CRUCIAL & he killed him at APACHE. After talking with his manager B Rich and getting the word that TJ Chapman was also on board to manage B.o.B.'s career I soon became a fan of the movement even before I was a fan of the music.

I guess I like rooting for the underdog but I never really thought B.o.B. was. How could he be with the depth of talent he has as an artist. A co-sign from Jim Jonsin, B Rich and TJ Chapman? He had to win. I remember the tweets and blogposts of The Ham Squad and the journey to Bobby Ray getting signed with ATLANTIC. The LRG billboard in Times Square, the sold out show at Smith's Olde Bar, and even the performance at the FOOTLOCKER in S. Dekalb mall. All this w/o a single at radio (if I remember correctly). Just a deep connection to the fans from hitting the pavement hard and from what I could see using that advance money wisely.

Fast forward to BET Hip Hop Awards 2009 where we were doing the celebrity style suite and B Rich remembering was like "Yeah I was just talking with some of your people in the Entertaiment division out in LA." I didn't know what to make of it so I was like "Oh word? Dope!" But I should've known better. I should've known what he and TJ were cooking up.

I got a copy of B.o.B.'s debut and am jamming to it. I see dude starting to get his just due and am super excited that he is now part of the ah-dee-dahz family! Congratulations to The Ham Squad. Welcome to Mi Familia #3Stripes2Soles1love

I love my job. It's not even really work to me. Today I met a customer who was in the market for a new pair of sneakers to replace his adidas Goodyear's that he's had for at least three years. The more we engaged in dialogue I discovered some funny facts regarding these shoes

They have walked across The Great Wall of China
They helped Eddie escape French Police during the World Cup Finals in France (his eyes still appeared a little red from the tear gas)
They helped Eddie stay nimble during the Bull Run in Spain

Eddie had just gotten married in Gwinett the day before and as part of starting a new chapter in his life he decided to replace his old sneakers kind of like "out with the old and in with the new".

So while we weren't able to replace his beloved Goodyear models we did find a good pair of SL 72's that seemed to suit Eddie well.

"I'll never buy any other brand than adidas" said Eddie

I know how you feel brother... I'm the exact same way

These shoes are being laid to rest in a private ceremony to be held by Eddie and his new bride. (Hopefully after the honeymoon homie!)

When it comes to the Stan Smith there is no questioning the popularity and overall impact the model has had since it was first released by adidas in 1965.
Getting given the treatment by a slew of collaborators over the last decade has meant a number of make-ups of the Stan Smith have been available, with varying degrees of impact.

The Stan Smith Mid though, hasn't born the brunt of attention like its lower cut sibling, leaving room for some killer variations on the collaboration front.

This joint effort, named ‘Raw Dogs’ sees OG New York based street-wear brand 10.Deep sprinkle some of their style on the Stan Smith Mid to produce a version worthy of both brand's combined heritage. The name plays off the rawhide laces and graphical monster mouth sock-liner while taking inspiration from the ongoing series of sticker attack tees from 10.Deep.

So the long awaited day finally came! Friday the 15th we officially launched the adidas x Star Wars collection at the Lenox Mall store in Atlanta, Ga. There was plenty of excitement, local celebrity appearances, Darth Vader/ Storm Troppers bobble head, posters & stickers giveaways and oh yeah KICKS AND GEAR...

Grammy Award winning super producers J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League w/ their recording artist LAWS (middle) out to the event. Little did I know the homie ROOK BEATS (far right) was a huge Star Wars fan (that's tattoo of a light sabber on his left forearm)
